Sheikh Safi al-Din Shrine Ensemble

 

 

Sheikh Safi al-Din Shrine Ensemble is a noteworthy historical place in Ardebil which has been built from 16 to 18th century. The ensemble consists of a library, mosque, school, public bath, hospital, bazaars, several offices etc. which initially functioned as a small city. It also hosts the tomb of Sheikh Safi al-Din (the ancestor of Safavid dynasty), Shah Esmaeil I (the founder of Safavid dynasty) and his wife and some of the killed soldiers and commanders of Battle of Chaldiran. The ensemble also contains the largest and the most complete Khanqah of the country which became a prototype and an architectural pattern for other khanqahs. Many of Sufis travel to Iran annually to visit the Sheikh Safi al-Din ensemble that was inscribed on UNESCO World Heritage Site list in 2010.
